Circus Gerbola 2010-2011

In 2010 and 2011, I spent two seasons on tour with a highly respected traditional circus in Ireland, Circus Gerbola. At first I was there as a contract share, and then in 2011 for the whole 9 month season.

Traditional circus interests me as a way of life aswell as what it can offer as a performing art form. Living in a circus involves a lot outside of being a performer, helping with the build ups and pull downs, maintaining costumes and props is more work because of the wear and tear on tour.

Its hard to put onto words how significant this experience has been to me personally and professionally as many things about the circus as a way of life are subtley absorbed, the stories, the dedication to the art, the attitude towards work and people…. I’ve learnt that its requires very hard work and dedication to keep a circus on tour, and that audiences perhaps dont realise quite what a feat it is to put up the tent and make the show over and over.

The momentum of the shows keeps it rolling, and the motto ‘ the show must go on’ is kept to even in the most extreme conditions. There is something wonderful about how the circus puts on the show in sometimes harsh conditions, in the wind, rain, mud, on lumpy hills, rocks and stones, sand or lush green meadows, or shopping centre carparks! The sawdust is sprinkled out the ring mat spread, and here we go again!

Previous to this tour I was working on the cabaret and festival circuit in England, often performing a different act for each show I was a part of. Being on tour has meant I can refine my acts, and develop my performing skills by working with so many different audiences. I have enjoyed being part of a family show where everyone is welcome, and meeting people from all walks of life in Ireland.  I have learnt about being part of the culture of traditional circus, living with people who come from circus families. I have been able to absorb something of that way of life, a community of people working hard to keep the show on the road, to entertain and delight audiences.
